Users must have a mental model of computers; otherwise, they wouldn’t be able to use them at all. However, the scope of this mental model covers, say, user interface widgets and probably some landmark- or list-based navigation. The problem—the thing that makes computers different from cars—is that computers interact differently based on context or conditions outside of our control. Much of this context might not be understood by the user, or might have never been explained. Cars are pretty old technology, and children learn about them in school.
We are building a vocabulary and language for social application design in the same spirit as Alexander: We were always looking for the capacity of a pattern language to generate coherence, and that was the most vital test used, again and again, during the process of creating a language. The language was always seen as a whole. We were looking for the extent to which, as a whole, a pattern language would produce a coherent entity. | Mommy, What’s a Social User Experience Pattern? 19 FIGURE 1-3 The social ecosystem encompassing all the patterns, categories, anti-patterns, and principles found here in this book.
These are such simple, fundamental interactions to the Kinect and smartphone that you wouldn’t give them a thought in isolation. But the combination is exciting, and that’s where the magic lies. We tend to think of our interfaces in isolating ways: “Oh, this a mouse and keyboard interface. And here is a touchscreen interface. This one is for voice. This one is for Kinect air gestures. ” But the reality is that more and more of the computers we carry every day have all of these features onboard.
