ANTI-SHIPPING OPERATIONS, 1939-40 The British Empire, global in its extent as it then was, was founded on sea power. The Royal Navy had not only reigned supreme around the world for more than a century and a half, it had also been the model for all other navies whose political masters had harboured ambitions of empire. This included both Germany and Japan. Many of the latter's capital ships, notably a unit of the Kongo class, were actually built in British yards! When Britain and France declared war on Germany shortly after the invasion of Poland, it posed problems for the Third Reich, although these were not at first fully appreciated.
This was not done without opposition: on 2 September Hajo Herrmann's Heinkel had one of its engines knocked out by a frontal attack from a Polish fighter. He limped back to base on his remaining engine. The level bombing attack on Krakow airfield was followed by the dive bombers of I/StG 2 led by Oskar Dinort. But when the Dorniers of I and III/ KG 77 arrived, dust and smoke obscured the target and aircraft of the latter unit were forced by the poor visibility to drop their load of 50kg bombs from very low level—barely 50m.
At least as important was the seizure of the Albert Canal bridges to the south-east, in Belgium. The waterway was a considerable barrier to the German advance, and three bridges had been earmarked for capture. The Belgian Army had set demolition charges on all three, and, unlike the Vistula crossing in Poland, there was no chance of forestalling their destruction by air attack. This area of Belgium was good tank country—flat and open, and ideal for the Panzers—but unless the bridges could be secured the advance would quickly grind to a halt.
