SELF-ALIGNING BEARINGS Where a single row of balls is fitted, as shown in Fig. D, the outer race has its external surface formed as a portion of a sphere to fit into a housing of corresponding shape. This allows the bearing as a whoie to tilt and accommodate itseif to a shaft running out of line. In addition to carrying radial loads, these bearings will withstand end-thrust. The compact form of self-aligning bearing illustrated in Fig. E is more commonly used. Here, a double row of balls is fitted, and the spherical form of the outer ball track enables the inner race, together with the balls, to align itself in the bearing and so compensate for any misalignment of the shaft.

These three grades of bearings have, in addition, some axial play or end float, amounting to approximately one and a half J f d hmetricdl _- clearance L end floclt 33. Ordinary pattern of ball bearing. FIG. outer race- ten-thousandths in the Grade 0 and five then-thousandths of an inch in the Grade GOlO bearing. The balls may be fitted in the bearing either in the form of a continuous circle, in which case the bearing is said to be filled, or they may be separated by means of a bronze, pressed steel, or plastic cage.

The simplest and most primitive way of lubricating a bearing is to provide an oil-way leading through the bearing felt \ Pa id 32. Lubricating a ing with a felt pad.
