4) • Attachments: This muscle was almost never described in detail in gorillas. Deniker (1885) stated that in the gorilla fetus dissected by him the genioglossus Head and Neck Musculature 21 is separated from its counterpart near the mandible but then contact it, posteriorly. Hosokawa & Kamiya (1961–1962) illustrated this muscle in a gorilla specimen. As in the adult gorillas previously dissected by us (Diogo et al. 2010), in the baby gorilla the genioglossus was well separated from the geniohyoideus, running from the mandible to the tongue, and seemed to be loosely connected, or not connected at all, to the hyoid bone.

2010) the abductor pollicis brevis was apparently partially inserted onto the distal phalanx of the thumb, but this is not the case in the baby gorilla; Raven (1950) and Preuschoft (1965) stated that, in the gorillas dissected by them, there was a partial insertion onto the distal portion of metacarpal I. 09 g; Fig. 7) • Attachments: From pisiform, and occasionally from the adjacent ligaments, as well as from the metacarpal V, the hamate and/or the triquetrum, to ulnar side of metacarpophalangeal joint and of base of proximal phalanx of digit 5.

Usual innervation: Medial pectoral nerve, from C7, and lateral pectoral nerve, from C6 and C7 (Hepburn 1892); anterior/ventral thoracic (pectoral) nerves (Sommer 1907, Preuschoft 1965). • Notes: Due to its usual attachment onto the coracoid process of the scapula, various authors have designated the pars abdominalis of the pectoralis major of gorillas under the name ‘pectoralis quartus’ or ‘pectoralis abdominis’, suggesting that this structure is not homologous to the pars abdominalis of the pectoralis major of humans (which usually goes to the humerus and not to the coracoid process of the scapula), and that it is possibly derived from the ‘entopectoralis’ sensu Lander 1918 (for a recent review on the homologies of the ‘entopectoralis’ and of the ‘ectopectoralis’, see Diogo et al.
