I do realize that the porcupines were there first, and I’m basically an intruder on their land, so I did research preventative methods of keeping them away from my little cabin. I tried everything I had found online. I painted used motor oil on the damaged corners of my cabin (horrible for the environment and groundwater), placed mothballs around the area, and even applied hot sauce to the gnawedon wood. None of these avenues came even close to working, especially not the hot sauce, as one of its main ingredients is salt.

Now that’s scary, and good luck explaining it to the insurance company!

A good many other parts and materials of the cabin were found curbside, such as the exterior door and all but one window. Most of the other materials were purchased from mom ’n’ pop mills up in that neck of the woods where bargaining down a price and haggling are welcome. You gotta love that! I bought the seven true-2-by-8 cedar roof rafters (each initially 15 feet in length), for a mere $40 at one mill. The entire staircase and deck leading to the cabin’s entry were built out of bargain-pile/grade 3 cedar amounting to a little over $50.
