Seacoast artillery ammunition was composed of four basic elements. A primer at the base of the charge ignited the propellant in the gun. This explosion forced the projectile out of the gun, and the fuze detonated the explosive charge when the projectile struck. , and 90mm guns - used fixed ammunition, joining the projectile with the propellant in a metal case resembling a large rifle cartridge, with a primer in its base. In the smaller calibers, these were qUick to load and helped seal the breech.

Requiring a massive steam-powered hydrauliC system, this battery design became instantly obsolete when the Buffington-Crozier disappearing carriage proved satisfactory. One M189S 16in. gun was built, a A80VE Two M1898 3in. guns on MP M1898 at Battery Irwin. VA. in April 1918. Firing practice is under way at this fourgun battery. The officer in the battery commander's station is operating an M191 0 azimuth instrument to spot the fall of the shells. Note the 6-pdr RF guns in the background in front of the mine planter.

Fifty continental batteries were planned, with about 40 more in American territories and lend-lease bases. The same factors that curtailed the 16in. program affected the 6in. program, and only 68 batteries were entirely or largely completed. The original plan was to use M1903 and M1905 guns on new barbette carriages. When not enough older guns were available, a new M1 gun was designed and manufactured in small numbers. The most visually striking feature of the batteries was the cast-steel shield around each carriage.
