Fifty continental batteries were planned, with about 40 more in American territories and lend-lease bases. The same factors that curtailed the 16in. program affected the 6in. program, and only 68 batteries were entirely or largely completed. The original plan was to use M1903 and M1905 guns on new barbette carriages. When not enough older guns were available, a new M1 gun was designed and manufactured in small numbers. The most visually striking feature of the batteries was the cast-steel shield around each carriage.
