CONCLUSIONS The choice among the three LNG ship tank concepts will be made according to several factors, all interrelated. Undoubtedly, tank cost will be one of the major factors but its importance will depend upon the size of the ships, the cost of the gas and its delivered selling price, and any patents and royalties which may be involved. The choice of tank design may also be influenced by regulatory changes resulting from operating experience with present LNG tankers. For example, it would seem reasonable to expect a change in the simultaneous requirements for both an outer tank inspection and a secondary barrier if the tanks can be inspected from the insulation side as well as from the cargo side; a satisfactory experience with free-standing tanks may make secondary barriers superfluous.
