This paper gives an overview of different types of recently developed multilayer coatings and their application in power transmission under dry sliding conditions. To evaluate the capability of these coatings, steel substrates were coated with oxide ceramics, metal alloys and hard metals by high velocity flame spraying (HVOF). After a grinding process several types of sliding lacquers are applied by air spraying on hardened steel and coated specimens. g. M0S2, PTFE or graphite were tested under high loads and sliding conditions.
Since the lubricant lacquer is applied in very' thin layers, the properties of the hard phase coating as well as the properties of the lubricant lacquer can take effect on the contact surface. Lubricant lacquers are especially used in industrial applications where grease and lubricants fail to function, like in vacuum, at extremely low temperatures, at high temperatures and low pressures, in the presence of solvents, etc. ". Another important field of application is small relative motion under high surface pressure, which causes high static friction.
