The reduction and carbonization were performed in a fluidized-bed reactor. Nanophase W-Co composite was prepared at 750C by H2 reduction. The reactive intermediate was carbonized immediately at 930C after the reduction of W-Co salts, controlling carbon activity in CHJH, and COJHZ gas to form the final WCCo m-range powder product. The reason for combining the two processes in a s i l t run was to ensure that the high surface srea W and Co wuld remain clean, and the W was carbonized quickly to the hard hexagonal WC phase within a soft and tough Co binder phase.
